I've always loved magic. The cozy feeling of emersing myself in the unknown has always been something I would invoke if I was bored or uncomfortable. As a kid, I would watch magic specials on television and be enamored by the mysterious aura that permeated from those shows. I always felt a kinship with monsters and witches, and would empathise with them, often imagining myself joining their ranks. Mentions of occult books and writings would pique my interest, but upon closer inspection they would reveal nothing to me but a rabbit hole so vast that I knew I would never do more than scratch the surface.
The early internet was a similar story. Though I was still young (and perhaps because of it) dial-up internet was a portal and a gateway that held boundless possibilities. There was a sense that no matter how far you looked, you would never experience it all. Every site was unique and bursting with its own style. The potpurri of the AOL homepage, the wacky wonders of Nickelodeon.com, the fun of Addicting Games and Miniclip and Coolmath Games. I took part in chatrooms and forums of various topics and interests, all with their own unique niche communities and culture.
This is the kind of energy that I want to embody with my neocities site. The internet used to be a place of unique and diverse culture, and I wish to imprint just a bit of my own back into the now homoginized web.
